Top Ten Tuesday: Beach Must-Reads

Top Ten Tuesday is a weekly meme posted by The Broke and the Bookish.
This week's topic is:

Top Ten Books that I Plan to Have in my Beach Bag this Summer

I live in Michigan. AKA: What is the beach? That being said, I don't really get to go to the beach a lot during the summers here unless I want to travel about 5 hours up north, which, ain't nobody got time for that. So instead I've decided to list the top ten books I absolutely MUST READ before the summer is over (thanks for the idea The Secret Life of a Bookworm).

Here's my list (in no particular order):

1. Weird Girl and What's His Name by Meagan Brothers
2. A Madness So Discreet by Mindy McGinnis
3. Blood and Salt by Kim Liggett
4. The Darkest Part of the Forest by Holly Black

5. Some Boys by Patty Blount
6. Dangerous Boys by Abigail Haas
7. My Heart and Other Black Holes by Jasmine Warga

8. The Girl on the Train by Paula Hawkins
9. Red Queen by Victoria Aveyard
10. Asylum by Madeleine Roux

What books will YOU read this summer?

EXCERPT
I sat up and pulled my knees in close to my
chest.  Electricity flared in the air as
Luke inhaled.
“You know, Logan, you’re not who I expected you to
be,” he said, taking a long thought-filled pause.  “I thought the next twelve months were going
to be hell living with a California socialite, but you’re pretty amazing.  I guess I owe you an apology.”
“So, it’s a good
thing that I’m nothing like you expected?” I asked.
“It’s a really, really good thing.”
As I started to smile back he craned his neck to
look away from me.  His eyes
focused.  Something black flashed across
the road but I was more scared by Luke’s reaction.  The warmth had vanished from Luke in a
heartbeat.  The object stopped moving
toward us when it got to an opening between the trees.  Even though I could feel Luke’s concern, I leaned
forward toward the window, curious.  It
was a wolf – a really big wolf, staring directly at us with bright green
eyes.  It was close enough I could see
quick breaths escape into the crisp rain-drenched air.  I was startled when the engine roared to
life.  Luke threw the car into reverse,
and I nearly slammed into the dash as the sound of gravel scattered everywhere.
He quickly jockeyed around and pulled
back onto the road heading home.  I kept
my eyes on the wolf until he was no longer in sight.
“Was that a wolf?” I asked.  Everything happened so quickly, I had to be
sure.
“Yes,” he spit.
“I’ve never seen a wolf before – that thing was huge.”
Luke immediately turned to look at me with an
expression that I couldn’t begin to read.
“What’s going on?” I pressed, puzzled.
When he looked toward the road and didn’t answer, I
knew my question needed to be more specific to get results.
“Why are you freaking out?  It was just a wolf.”  I was worried.  He had gone from warm and comforting to moody
and distant over such a small thing and I second-guessed how quickly I had
fallen for him.
“Because I need to get you home, it’s getting late,”
he muttered, failing to control his tone.
“That doesn’t make any sense, Luke.  I have no curfew and you flaked as soon as
you saw the wolf.”
“Wolves are dangerous.”
“We were in the car,” I countered.

“Doesn’t matter.”

Feature & Follow Friday #5

Feature & Follow Friday is a fun event hosted by Alison Can Read & Parajunkee. The purpose is to gain more followers and make new friends throughout the book blogging community. Keep in mind, though, the point is to follow other blogs also. I follow you, you follow me. :)

This week's question: How do you organize your books?

LOL @ organization. I don't "organize" per say, I neatly place them wherever the hell I want. Seriously, my room has books everywhere. Some are lucky enough to make it on the bookshelf where they belong, while others are just hanging out on the floor next to the bed. As far as Goodreads goes, I organize my books on shelves such as: what I want to read, what I need to read ASAP, my fictional boyfriends, WTF did I just read, and didn't finish. I have way too many shelves to name all of them.

This week's question: How do you decide what books to read?

As I've said before, I'm totally guilty of judging a book by its cover. Blasphemy, I know. If a book has a super sweet cover, without a doubt I'm going to pick it up and check out the synopsis, maybe read a little of the first chapter even. I love books that are a little out there, with topics that some people might shy away from. I mostly stick to the YA books unless I've been referred to check out a book, or if a book is similar to one I just read. A lot of the books I've found were suggested based on those I've already read. If the synopsis can make me go, "For real? You wrote a book about this?", then obviously I'm going to buy it.

Giveaway! Dangerous Girls by Abigail Haas

Happy Hump Day everyone! I especially hate Wednesdays. They are the mold on my favorite cheese, the crust on my bread, the autocorrect on my phone. Wednesdays are just yuck. So to spice things up a little, I'm going to host a giveaway!

I think Dangerous Girls by Abigail Haas is one of the most underrated books there is out there. I got the suggestion to read this book after I read Sharp Objects by Gillian Flynn. This book was right up that alley. It's considered a mature YA novel, but there's definitely sex, alcohol, and drug-use, so I use "YA" with some hesitation here. It's a psychological thriller and an emotional rollercoaster. It will have you feeling elated, disgusted, and betrayed all wrapped up into one. This book was written so well that I would read it all over again, and I wouldn't do that with many books. When I first picked it up I wasn't really sure what to think...I mean, the cover was cutesy, with pink and aqua and what-not, and how could this be a mystery novel? It blew me away. From page one. I literally could not put this dang book down! Chapter one - check. Chapter two, three, and four - check. Aww crap I'm done with the book! That's exactly what happened. You best believe I was upset when this book ended. It left me feeling kind of sad in a way, like why did this book have to end? WHY?!

So because I really feel like this book is in danger of being severely under-read and more people need to discover it's greatness, I'm hosting a giveaway for a paperback copy of the book. EVERYONE should real this! It will run from May 7 - May 14. The winner will be randomly selected and then notified by email. Don't forget to check out her newest book, Dangerous Boys!

Cover Reveal: A Madness So Discreet by Mindy McGinnis

So I'm checking out the Official Fall 2015 HarperTeen Cover Reveals, and I stumble across this little gem. The cover caught my eye. The synopsis sounds amazing.

It will be mine.

Taken from Goodreads:

Grace Mae knows madness.

She keeps it locked away, along with her voice, trapped deep inside a brilliant mind that cannot forget horrific family secrets. Those secrets, along with the bulge in her belly, land her in a Boston insane asylum.

When her voice returns in a burst of violence, Grace is banished to the dark cellars, where her mind is discovered by a visiting doctor who dabbles in the new study of criminal psychology. With her keen eyes and sharp memory, Grace will make the perfect assistant at crime scenes. Escaping from Boston to the safety of an ethical Ohio asylum, Grace finds friendship and hope, hints of a life she should have had. But gruesome nights bring Grace and the doctor into the circle of a killer who stalks young women. Grace, continuing to operate under the cloak of madness, must hunt a murderer while she confronts the demons in her own past.

In this beautifully twisted historical thriller, Mindy McGinnis, acclaimed author of Not a Drop to Drink and In a Handful of Dust, explores the fine line between sanity and insanity, good and evil—and the madness that exists in all of us.

This book is going to be fantastic. I literally CANNOT wait until October 6th.

Giveaway! Three Day Summer by Sarvenaz Tash

The awesome YA book blog Pure Imagination is hosting a giveaway for the book Three Day Summer by Sarvenaz Tash. Check out the review on her blog here. This cover is amazing...see?

It's all cute and hippie-ish, and I'm totally guilty of judging a book by it's cover. And I love this cover. So I'll read it.

For this giveaway I'm asked to write a blog post about my favorite book featuring lots of music. I can honestly say I haven't really read any books with music in them, although I have a bunch in my TBR pile. So instead, I'll talk about the book I really really want to read on my Goodreads list that has a lot of music in it, the lovely Nick & Norah's Infinite Playlist.

I've seen the movie but I want to read the book badly. I liked the movie, but the book is usually better. This book has everything I love - music, love at first sight, and the harsh reality of finding yourself. It's about a first date that lasts all night long among two teens that both got their hearts broken. They're also both into music. They go on an adventure to discover the next band, end up getting themselves into crazy situations, and end up finding out who they really are.

Go check out this giveaway!
